The Grand Valley State University women's soccer team, ranked fifth nationally, secured a 6-1 victory over Michigan Tech on Sunday at the GVSU Soccer Field. With this win, the Lakers' season record improves to 12-2 overall and 9-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).
During the first half, Grand Valley State controlled play by scoring four goals from 22 shots, nine of which were on target. Michigan Tech did not register any shots in the opening half. Sonya Mehta opened scoring in the 12th minute after capitalizing on a deflection inside the box for her fourth goal of the season.
In the 27th minute, Kacy Lauer increased the lead to 2-0 by heading in a rebound following an initial attempt by Mehta. Ivy Wilhelm made it 3-0 eleven minutes later with a shot from outside the box assisted by Shea Douglass. Acadia Murphy closed out first-half scoring with her first career goal as a Laker via penalty kick.
Early in the second half, Alli French scored her fifth goal of the season after collecting a rebound from another Mehta attempt. Michigan Tech responded with their only goal in the 50th minute from long range into the bottom right corner. Four minutes later, Mehta added her second goal of the day and fifth of the season.
Grand Valley State finished with a total of 39 shots compared to Michigan Tech's four and held an advantage of nine corner kicks while conceding none. The result strengthens GVSU’s position atop GLIAC standings with a five-point lead over Saginaw Valley State and four matches remaining.
The Lakers will host Davenport on Friday, October 31 at 5:00 p.m., followed by Purdue Northwest on Sunday, November 2 at 1:00 p.m. Both games are scheduled to be streamed live on FloCollege.
